The Sea Organ of Zadar: Nature's Symphony

Located on Zadar's Riva, the Sea Organ (Morske orgulje) is a one-of-a-kind architectural marvel that combines the restorative power of the Adriatic Sea with innovative sound design. Created by architect Nikola Bašić and opened to the public in 2005, the Sea Organ has revitalized Zadar’s waterfront, which had been marred by monotonous concrete after World War II.The organ consists of a series of underwater pipes built into the concrete steps that descend into the sea. As waves enter the pipes, they create air pressure that produces a series of random but harmonic sounds. The sounds are reminiscent of Dalmatian Klapa music, with seven sound clusters organized around two major key chords. The result is a continuous, ever-changing melody that depends on the strength and rhythm of the waves, offering a unique auditory experience with each visit.The Sea Organ stretches seventy meters along the shore, featuring thirty-five pipes of varying lengths, diameters, and slopes installed at the level of the lowest tide. The steps above the organ serve as a gathering place for locals and tourists alike, providing a space to relax, enjoy the sounds, and watch Zadar's famed sunsets. Nearby, Bašić also designed the Greeting to the Sun, a solar-powered installation that creates a dazzling light show at sunset, complementing the Sea Organ's melodies.
