Discover more about Stone Gate

The Stone Gate, or Kamenita Vrata in Croatian, stands as a testament to Zagreb's rich history and deep-rooted faith. Constructed between 1242 and 1266 as part of the Gradec fortified city walls, it was one of four main entrances to medieval Zagreb. Today, it is the sole surviving gate, transformed into a unique chapel and a cherished symbol of the city. The gate's transformation into a sacred space occurred after a devastating fire in 1731 swept through Gradec. Amidst the destruction, a painting of the Virgin Mary with the baby Jesus miraculously survived unscathed. This event was seen as a divine sign, leading to the gate's conversion into a chapel. The painting was placed behind an artistically forged iron fence, and the chapel was adorned with baroque details. Inside the Stone Gate, visitors find a peaceful sanctuary. The walls are covered with marble slabs engraved with prayers and expressions of gratitude, many bearing the words "Hvala ti" (Thank you). People light candles, offer prayers, and seek comfort in the serene atmosphere. The shrine is dedicated to Our Lady of the Stone Gate, the patron saint of Zagreb. A statue of Dora Krupićeva, a character from August Šenoa's novel *The Goldsmith's Treasure*, stands in a niche outside the gate. Visiting the Stone Gate offers a unique glimpse into Zagreb's past and present, where history, faith, and community intertwine.
