Archaeological Museum Zadar: A Journey Through Dalmatian History

The Archaeological Museum Zadar, located in the heart of Zadar's historic center, provides a fascinating journey through the region's rich past. Established in 1832, it stands as the second oldest museum in Croatia and one of the oldest in Europe. Its extensive collection of over 100,000 artifacts and monuments spans from the Paleolithic period to the end of the 15th century.The museum's exhibits are thoughtfully arranged chronologically and thematically across three floors. The ground floor focuses on the cultural and religious heritage of Croatia between the 7th and 12th centuries.The first floor displays numerous objects illustrating life in northern Dalmatia during Roman times. This includes statues of Roman emperors, weaponry, sculptures, mosaics, glassware and items from local necropoli. A highlight is the 2.5-meter high statue of Emperor Augustus.The second floor houses prehistoric archaeological material from the Stone and Metal Ages, dating back to approximately 10,000 BC. Here, you'll find decorative ceramics, weaponry, and items brought by the seafaring Liburnians from Greece and Italy.Beyond its permanent exhibitions, the Archaeological Museum Zadar actively engages in archaeological research, organizes temporary exhibitions, and hosts various events throughout the year.
