Discover more about Krka National Park

Krka National Park, established in 1985, protects 109 square kilometers of the Krka River basin in the Šibenik-Knin county of Croatia. The park's main draw is the Krka River, which flows through a 200-meter-deep karstic canyon, creating a series of seven breathtaking waterfalls. Skradinski Buk is the largest and most famous of these, featuring cascades that step down over 400 meters. Roški Slap, also known as the 'great waterfall,' is another impressive sight with a 22-meter-high main fall and numerous smaller cascades. The park's natural beauty extends beyond its waterfalls. The Krka River's mineral-rich waters and unique karst geology support diverse plant and animal life. Over 860 plant species and subspecies thrive here, including endemic Illyrian-Adriatic species. The park is also home to 18 fish species, ten of which are endemic, making the Krka River a natural landmark of the highest category. Birdwatchers will delight in the abundance of bird species, with 222 recorded in the park, making it one of Europe's most valuable ornithological regions. Krka National Park is also rich in history and culture. The area has been inhabited since Neolithic times and has been an important strategic location throughout history. Within the park, visitors can explore medieval fortresses, ancient watermills, and the Burnum Roman military camp. The Visovac Monastery, founded in 1445 on an island in Visovac Lake, and the Krka Monastery, a Serbian Eastern Orthodox monastery founded in 1345, offer glimpses into the region's spiritual heritage. Europe's first hydroelectric power plant was built on the Krka River in 1895, further highlighting the park's historical significance.
