Discover more about Utvrda Kličevica

Utvrda Kličevica, or Kličevica Fortress, is a medieval castle located near the village of Raštević, approximately 7 kilometers west of Benkovac in Croatia. Constructed in 1454 by Grgur from the Kurjaković noble family, it was strategically positioned near the border of Venetian Dalmatia and the Croatian-Hungarian Kingdom. The fortress was built to protect the Kurjaković's estates and control the vital trade routes of Ravni Kotari, especially the mills along the Kličevica River. The fortress has an irregular, trapezoidal shape with a prominent round tower that served as a lookout and defensive point. The stone roof of the tower has been preserved in its original form. Within the walls, archaeological excavations have revealed evidence of its military role, including a bronze three-barreled cannon, arrows, crossbow missiles, and stone catapult balls. Ownership of Kličevica was contested, and the fortress was attacked several times by the Venetians. In 1527, the Ottomans captured the area, and the Croats abandoned the castle. The Ottomans garrisoned it until 1550 when they advanced to Vrana, diminishing Kličevica's strategic importance, after which it fell into disrepair. Today, Kličevica stands as a captivating historical site surrounded by pine forests and a small canyon, offering visitors a chance to explore medieval Croatian history and enjoy the natural beauty of the region.
