Getting there

Walking

From the Riva promenade, enter Diocletian's Palace through the Brass Gate. Walk through the substructures (cellars), and ascend the stairs towards the Peristyle. The Vestibul is located directly behind the Peristyle, serving as the entrance to the former imperial residence. There are no fees to access the Vestibul.

Public Transport

From Split Airport (SPU), take the line 2 bus to Split - Tržnica. From there, walk along the Riva promenade to the Diocletian Palace. Enter through the Brass Gate and proceed through the substructures to the Peristyle. The Vestibul will be located behind the Peristyle. The bus fare is approximately €2-€3. The walk from the bus stop is approximately 10 minutes.

Taxi

From Split Airport (SPU), a taxi ride to the Vestibul will take approximately 25 minutes, depending on traffic. The taxi will drop you off near the Diocletian's Palace. Enter the palace through one of the gates (Brass Gate from the Riva is closest) and walk towards the Peristyle. The Vestibul is located just behind the Peristyle. A taxi fare will cost approximately €35-€45.

Overview

The Vestibul, also known as the Rotonda or Atrium, is an impressive structure dating back to the early 4th century as an original part of Diocletian's Palace in Split. This circular hall, standing 17 meters high with a 12-meter diameter, functioned as a formal entrance to the imperial apartments, connecting to the Peristyle. It served as a grand meeting hall for the emperor's selected audiences, such as ambassadors, designed to impress those about to meet the ruler.Originally, the Vestibul featured a large dome adorned with glittering color mosaics, rounded niches housing statues, and white circular walls. While the mosaics and statues are no longer present, the structure's architectural design remains awe-inspiring. The open roof allows natural light to flood the space, creating a unique ambiance.Today, the Vestibul is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike. Its unique acoustics make it a favored location for Klapa groups, who perform traditional Dalmatian a cappella music during the summer months. Visitors can often enjoy impromptu concerts, adding a cultural richness to the historical setting. Climbing to the top of the Vestibul offers stunning panoramic views of Split.
