Discover more about Zadarska sfinga

The Sphinx of Zadar, or Zadarska sfinga, is a captivating landmark nestled in the Brodarica neighborhood of Zadar, Croatia. This intriguing monument was commissioned in 1918 by Giovanni Smirich, a local painter, conservator, and art collector, in memory of his beloved wife, Attilia Spineda de Cataneis, who passed away prematurely. The creation of the sphinx coincided with the construction of Villa Attilia, the first villa in Zadar's Maestral Bay, complete with an English park. Standing five meters long and three meters high, the concrete and stone sphinx has a unique design. Unlike traditional Egyptian sphinxes, Zadar's version has human hands instead of lion paws, which once held a sword. The sword is now missing, as is the relief of an eagle that once adorned its chest. The sphinx also features a nemesis headdress decorated with hieroglyphs. Legend says that the Zadar Sphinx grants wishes related to love. Over the years, the sphinx was neglected, and legends circulated about buried treasure, leading to damage from treasure hunters. Today, the City of Zadar is working to restore the sphinx and the surrounding park. Despite not being as famous as the Sea Organ or Greeting to the Sun, the Zadar Sphinx offers a blend of romance, art, and mystery, making it a worthwhile visit.
