    Public Transport

    To reach Nesactium via public transport, take bus route 23 or 23A from Pula's main bus station to Muntić or Valtura. From Muntić, walk approximately 1.5 km to the site, following local signs. From Valtura, the walk is about 1.7 km. A single bus fare from Pula to Valtura or Muntić costs around 11 Kuna. Check the bus schedule, as it may not be strictly adhered to.

    Driving

    If driving from Pula, take the D66 road north towards Vodnjan, then merge onto the D75. Follow signs to Muntić. From Muntić, follow local signs to Nesactium. Parking is available near the site. A taxi from Pula to Muntić will cost approximately €23-€28.

    Nesactium, also known as Vizače in the Istrian dialect and Nezakcij in Croatian, is an ancient archaeological site located in southern Istria, Croatia, near the villages of Muntić and Valtura. This site was once the capital of the Histri, an Iron Age tribe that inhabited the Istrian peninsula before Roman conquest. The Histri were known for their trade and piracy in the Mediterranean Sea and were connected to the prehistoric Castellieri culture.The settlement dates back to the 11th century BCE and was a significant political and religious center for the Histri. In 177 BC, after multiple battles, the Romans conquered and destroyed the town. According to legend, the Histrian King Epulon committed suicide rather than be captured. The town was rebuilt by the Romans, incorporating typical Roman features. Nesactium was located on the ancient Via Flavia, which connected Trieste to Dalmatia, and it remained inhabited until it was destroyed during barbarian invasions in the 6th and 7th centuries CE.Today, visitors can explore the remains of Nesactium, including the 800-meter-long walls, a necropolis, and various Roman structures such as the forum, temples, and basilicas. Archaeological finds, including ceramics, urns, and jewelry, aretestify to the site's historical importance. While a small museum exists on-site, many artifacts are housed in the Archaeological Museum of Istria in Pula. The site offers panoramic views of the surrounding valley and Budava Bay.
