Discover more about Krk grad povijesti i kulture Zidine/Town Walls

The Krk Town Walls, encircling almost the entirety of the old town, stand as a testament to the island's enduring history and strategic significance. With origins tracing back to the 3rd century BC, the walls have provided uninterrupted protection for the residents of Krk for millennia. These walls are among the largest in Croatia, after the walls of Ston and Dubrovnik. Constructed with megalithic blocks in a dry-stone style predating Roman influence, the walls showcase various architectural styles from different eras. A Roman inscription from 50–30 BC, discovered in 1848, mentions their reconstruction, further attesting to their age. Throughout the centuries, the walls have been maintained and reinforced, with major renovations ordered in 1489. The walls feature four city gates, each strategically positioned and reinforced with towers. The Great City Gate, first mentioned in 1350, connects the main square to the sea. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved walls, wander through the ancient gates, and admire the stunning views of Krk Town and the surrounding sea. The layering of the wall's construction can be observed at the Perossi House (Volsonis cafe). The Frankopan Castle, integrated into the city walls, adds another layer of historical depth to this remarkable landmark.
