Discover more about Makarska Observatory

Perched atop Glavica Hill in the heart of Makarska, the Makarska Observatory offers a unique blend of astronomical observation and historical significance. Constructed in 1974 within a memorial center honoring fallen soldiers of World War II, the observatory is the youngest in Croatia and a testament to innovative architectural integration. Designed by Matija Salaj, a pioneer of tourism-focused architecture, the observatory distinguishes itself by being located in a town center, a mere 50 meters from the waterfront and town beach, making it the closest observatory to the sea on the Adriatic coast. The observatory provides a unique scientific and tourist experience. Visitors can explore the cosmos through state-of-the-art telescopes and participate in educational programs suitable for all ages. The on-site Astro Park features a scaled solar system, offering a fun and interactive way for children to learn about the universe. The observatory hosts the annual Space Days event in mid-August, coinciding with the Perseid meteor shower, also known as the Tears of St. Lawrence. Run by volunteers from the DAUP-Orion astronomical association, the observatory is committed to promoting astronomy and ufology, especially among young people. The observatory's location on Glavica Hill, surrounded by pine trees, provides an ideal setting for stargazing, away from the bright lights of the city. A visit to the Makarska Observatory offers a memorable experience, combining education, history, and the beauty of the cosmos.
