Discover more about The Romanesque House

The Romanesque House stands as a testament to Poreč's enduring history, located in the heart of the city on Decumanus Street, near Marafor Square. Built in the 13th century, this two-story structure is a remarkable example of Romanesque residential architecture. The house has undergone several renovations and expansions throughout its existence, with significant modifications occurring in the 18th century when the second floor was divided and a wooden balcony was added. This recognizable balcony, however, is not considered an original part of the Romanesque design.Constructed with simple, roughly carved stone blocks, the house features a straightforward layout without internal partition walls. A notable architectural detail is the Romanesque bifora (a two-light window) on the main facade. The building's history is also marked by the destruction of the surrounding condominium during World War II, leaving the Romanesque House as a standalone structure.Today, the Romanesque House hosts a permanent exhibition titled "Living culture in Poreč in the 19th and 20th centuries". The exhibition space, spread across three floors, provides visitors with an intimate look into the lives of Poreč's inhabitants through historical artifacts, including clothing, utensils, and coins.
