Discover more about Sea Organ

Located on the western end of Zadar's Riva, the Sea Organ (Morske orgulje) is a captivating blend of architecture and nature. Created by architect Nikola Bašić and opened to the public in 2005, this unique installation uses the power of the Adriatic Sea to produce soothing, melodic sounds. Following the extensive damage Zadar suffered during World War II, the city's coastline was left with an uninspiring concrete facade. Bašić's vision was to revitalize this area, reconnecting the city with its maritime heritage and creating a new public space. The Sea Organ features a series of marble steps that descend into the sea, beneath which lie 35 polyethylene pipes of varying lengths and diameters. These pipes are connected to resonating chambers that produce harmonic sounds as waves push air through them. The sounds produced by the Sea Organ are ever-changing, depending on the sea conditions. On calm days, the music is gentle and soothing, while rougher weather brings a more intense and varied range of tones. The installation spans 70 meters of shoreline and includes seven groups of sound-producing elements, ensuring a complex and unpredictable melody. The adjacent Greeting to the Sun, another installation by Bašić, complements the Sea Organ with a solar-powered light show at sunset, creating a magical experience.
