Discover more about Trakoscan Castle

Trakošćan Castle, a majestic sentinel in northern Croatia, beckons visitors with its fairytale charm and rich history. Originally built in the 13th century as a defensive fortress, it guarded the road from Ptuj to the Bednja Valley. Legend attributes the name to either a Thracian fort (Arx Thacorum) or the medieval Drachenstein knights. Over the centuries, Trakošćan evolved from a strategic outpost to a noble residence, most notably under the ownership of the Drašković family from 1584 until 1944. The Draškovićs transformed the castle in the 19th century, embracing a romantic, neo-Gothic style inspired by German castles. This renovation included landscaping the grounds into an English-style park with exotic trees and an artificial lake, enhancing the castle's enchanting appeal. Today, Trakošćan Castle stands as a museum, showcasing the Drašković family's original furniture, portraits, weaponry, and a period kitchen. Visitors can explore the castle's various rooms, each reflecting a blend of neo-Renaissance, Gothic, and Baroque styles. The surrounding parkland invites leisurely strolls along the lake, offering breathtaking views of the castle and the Zagorje hills. The Fairy Path, a 5-kilometer trail around the lake, provides an immersive experience of the area's natural beauty.
