Driving

If driving from Zagreb, take the D1 highway towards the south and follow signs for Trakošćan. The drive is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Parking is available near the castle for a small fee, around 10 HRK.
Public Transport

From Zagreb, take a bus to Varaždin. From Varaždin, connect to a local bus that stops near Trakošćan Castle. Check bus schedules in advance as connections may be limited, especially on Sundays. From the bus stop, it's approximately a 2-kilometer walk to the castle, taking around 30 minutes. A taxi from Lepoglava to Trakošćan will cost approximately 50-70 HRK.

Originally built in the 13th century as a defensive fortress, it guarded the road from Ptuj to the Bednja Valley. Legend attributes the name to either a Thracian fort (Arx Thacorum) or the medieval Drachenstein knights. The Draškovićs transformed the castle in the 19th century, embracing a romantic, neo-Gothic style inspired by German castles.
