Getting There

  • Public Transport

    From Split, take bus line 22 or 35 operated by Promet Split from the main bus station. The bus ride takes approximately 20-35 minutes to the Klis Megdan stop, which is the last stop for bus 22. From there, it is a short walk to the fortress entrance. A two-trip ticket for Zone 2 costs around 22kn. Alternatively, a direct shuttle bus is available for around €3.

  • Car

    From Split, drive towards Solin and follow the signs to Klis. The drive takes approximately 25-30 minutes. Free parking is available near the fortress. Be aware that parking can be limited during peak season. From the parking area, it's a short, but steep, walk up to the main entrance.

Klis Fortress, known as the "Key to Dalmatia," is a historically significant fortress in Klis, Croatia, about 15 kilometers from Split. Built on a steep cliff between the Kozjak and Mosor mountains, the fortress has controlled passage through the mountain pass for over two thousand years.Founded by the Illyrians in the 2nd century BC, Klis Fortress has been a royal castle, a seat of Croatian kings, and a strategic point for defense against the Ottomans. The fortress has been modified and rebuilt over the centuries, resulting in a blend of architectural styles. Today, visitors can explore the ramparts, armory, and the Church of St. Vitus, originally an Ottoman mosque. The fortress also offers panoramic views of Split, Solin, and the surrounding area.More recently, Klis Fortress gained fame as a filming location for the city of Meereen in the popular TV series Game of Thrones, boosting its popularity as a tourist destination. The fortress is open to visitors year-round, and guided tours are available.
