Discover more about Saint Domnius Bell Tower

The Saint Domnius Bell Tower, locally known as Sveti Duje, is one of Split's most iconic symbols, offering breathtaking views and a climb through centuries of history. The tower is part of the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, a complex that incorporates Emperor Diocletian's mausoleum. Consecrated at the turn of the 7th century, the Cathedral is considered the oldest Catholic cathedral in the world that remains in use in its original structure. The bell tower's construction began in the 13th century and continued until the 16th century, resulting in a blend of Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles. A radical restoration between 1890 and 1908 removed many original Romanesque sculptures. Climbing the tower involves navigating approximately 200 steps via a narrow, winding staircase. The ascent can be challenging, with uneven steps and narrow passages. However, the panoramic views of Split, the Adriatic Sea, and the surrounding landscape make the climb worthwhile. From the top, you'll witness Split's terracotta rooftops, the shimmering Adriatic, and the rugged Dalmatian coast. The bells themselves are also fascinating to observe. The tower stands approximately 60 meters high and is a testament to Split's enduring history and architectural evolution.
