Discover more about Split City Museum

The Split City Museum, founded in 1946, resides in the northeastern part of Diocletian's Palace, specifically within the Gothic Papalić Palace. This palace, designed by Juraj of Dalmatia, showcases a beautiful courtyard, decorated portal, and a hall with preserved wooden ceilings. The museum's permanent exhibition highlights Split's history as an autonomous city commune from the 12th to 14th centuries. Exhibits include the city statute, seal, coins, and sculptures from the Cathedral's belfry. A section covers the Venetian rule from the 15th to 16th centuries, highlighting Marko Marulić's literary circle. The museum also displays weaponry used to defend Split from the 15th to 18th centuries. Visitors can explore the Vid Morpurgo collection, featuring items from the 19th-century Split Jew who founded the first library and bank. The museum also contains a gallery dedicated to Emanuel Vidović, Split's most important 20th-century painter. While the museum is currently undergoing renovations as of September 2024, it typically offers guided tours and audio guides in multiple languages.
