Discover more about Okić

Rising dramatically from the landscape, Okić Castle is a testament to Croatia's turbulent past and enduring spirit. Located just 5 kilometers from Samobor, this ancient fortification stands on a 499-meter-high rocky peak, offering stunning views of the surrounding Posavina, Pokuplje, Zagreb, Medvednica, and Plešivica regions. First mentioned in historical records dating back to 1193, it's believed that a fortification existed on this site even earlier, during the era of Croatian rulers. Okić Castle played a vital role in defending the area, providing refuge for King Béla IV during the Mongol invasion. Throughout the centuries, the castle withstood numerous attacks, including sieges by the Mongols and the Ottoman Turks. The castle's strategic importance led to its ownership by various noble families, including the princes of Okić, the Babonić, Frankopan, and Erdödy families. Abandoned in the 17th century, the castle gradually fell into ruin, leaving behind remnants of its walls and structures. Today, Okić Castle attracts hikers and climbers who come to explore its historic ruins and enjoy the breathtaking views. The challenging climb to the top is rewarded with a unique perspective on the Croatian landscape and a tangible connection to the past. For those seeking a more adventurous ascent, the southern approach to Okić ridge offers a more demanding climb. In 1843, Dragojla Jarnević, a writer from Karlovac, made history by scaling this route barefoot, marking the beginning of Croatian alpinism. Her pioneering spirit is commemorated by the "Dragojla's path," a testament to her daring feat.
