Fort Beekenburg, located on the Caracasbaai peninsula, is one of the oldest fortifications on Curaçao. Built in 1703, during the tenure of Governor Nicolaas van Beek (for whom it was later named), the fort was strategically positioned to defend the Spanish Water, a vital bay, from invaders. The fort's construction made it difficult for enemies to reach Willemstad. The fort is built with stones brought from the Netherlands as ballast. Throughout the 18th century, Fort Beekenburg successfully repelled attacks by the English, French, and pirates. The English occupied Curaçao twice, from 1800-1803 and again from 1807-1816.The complex features a round tower resembling a chess piece, a bastion-like projection, a ring wall, a low battery dating back to 1750, and a guardhouse. A water reservoir ensured a fresh water supply even during sieges. From 1927 to 2005, the area was owned by Shell, making the fort inaccessible. In 2005, the area was sold to the Antillean government and reopened to the public. Today, Fort Beekenburg is freely accessible, allowing visitors to explore its grounds and enjoy panoramic views of Caracas Bay.
