Constructed between 1767 and 1771, with its facade bearing the date 1769, the church is the oldest continuously used church on the island. Originally built to serve the garrison of Fort Amsterdam, the church has witnessed centuries of Curaçao's history. In 1804, during a British conquest, a cannonball struck the church's facade, a reminder of the island's tumultuous past that can still be seen today. The church has sturdy walls that were built to withstand any attack. Inside, the Fort Church boasts a striking blue wooden vault supported by four monumental columns. The mahogany pulpit and governor's bench, crafted in the 18th century by Pieter de Mey, are testaments to the exquisite craftsmanship of the era. The church also features copper chandeliers and a beautiful organ. The Fort Church Museum, located in the basement, offers an overview of Protestant history in Curaçao. Exhibits include old Bibles, wall maps, prints, a traditional pastor's robe, an ancient clock, and a remarkable silverware collection. The museum also houses the original clockwork from 1788, a gift from Captain Dirk van der Meer.Today, the Fort Church remains an active place of worship as part of the United Protestant Community. Visitors can explore the church and museum, immersing themselves in Curaçao's religious, cultural, and architectural heritage.
