Discover more about Hòfi Pastor (Curaçao)

Hòfi Pastor, meaning 'Priest's Orchard,' is a captivating nature park located near the village of Barber on the island of Curaçao. This tranquil oasis offers visitors a unique opportunity to step back in time and connect with the island's natural and cultural heritage. The park's centerpiece is undoubtedly the ancient Kapok tree, Curaçao's oldest living organism, a majestic silk-cotton tree with a history stretching back over 800 years. The story of the Kapok tree is intertwined with the history of Curaçao itself. It was brought to the island over 400 years ago by the Caiquetio Indians, a peaceful Arawak tribe who sought refuge from warring tribes in Venezuela. This tree, already centuries old at the time, became a symbol of resilience and adaptation, its gnarled branches and deep roots bearing witness to the island's ever-changing landscape. In the early 1800s, the land was sold to a Catholic priest, Monseigneur Nieuwindt, a tireless advocate for human rights. He held weekly Sunday masses in Papiamentu, the local language, which were attended by over 500 slaves. Plantation owners pressured the governor to end these sessions in 1829. Shortly thereafter, Mgr. Nieuwindt received permission to build a proper church in Barber, right next to his hòfi, which stands to this day.Visiting Hòfi Pastor is more than just a walk in the park; it's an immersive experience that engages all your senses. The vibrant colors of the flowers, the sweet scents of the fruit trees, the sounds of nature, and the touch of the soft Kapok cotton all combine to create a truly unforgettable experience. Whether you're seeking a peaceful retreat, a connection with nature, or a glimpse into Curaçao's rich history, Hòfi Pastor offers something for everyone.
