Discover more about Fort Nassau

Fort Nassau, officially known as Fort Oranje Nassau, stands as a historical sentinel overlooking Willemstad, Curaçao. Constructed in 1796, it was initially named Fort Republiek by the Dutch to protect the island from British naval attacks. However, in 1807, the British captured Curaçao and renamed the fort Fort George. When the Dutch regained control in 1816, it was renamed once more to Fort Oranje Nassau, though it became commonly known as Fort Nassau. While it briefly saw action against an English invasion in 1807, the fort primarily served as a preventive measure. Over time, its military significance diminished, and in 1959, it was repurposed into a restaurant. Today, Fort Nassau offers visitors a chance to dine in a historic setting while enjoying breathtaking panoramic views of Willemstad, the harbor, and the coastline. The fort also serves as a signal station for incoming and outgoing vessels.Visitors can explore the fort's well-preserved features, including cannons along the walls, a former prison, and a primitive toilet used by soldiers. The site provides a glimpse into Curaçao's colonial past and the strategic importance of the island in the Caribbean. The restaurant at Fort Nassau offers a diverse menu, described as "casual fine dining," with both lunch and dinner served in a semi-open-air setting. The terrace around the bar is an ideal spot to witness Curaçao's stunning sunsets while enjoying a tropical cocktail.
