Located on John F. Kennedy Boulevard in Willemstad, the Freedom Monument, also known as Desenkadená, is a powerful symbol of Curaçao's journey toward liberation. The monument commemorates the struggle against slavery, which was finally abolished in Curaçao in 1863. August 17 is celebrated as the start of the struggle towards liberation, and events are held at the monument to commemorate this fight. The monument's design features intricate carvings and inscriptions that tell the story of liberation and human rights. The central figures include representations of enslaved people breaking free from their chains, symbolizing the ideals of freedom, power, and dignity. The monument is made up of three figures: two men and a woman who symbolize the leaders of the rebellion; the middle figure represents Tula, who holds a hammer to break the chains that hold them prisoner. The monument was created by Curaçaoan visual artist Nel Simon and erected in 1998 on the site where Tula, who led the 1795 slave rebellion, was executed. Visitors can reflect on the monument's significance while enjoying the lively atmosphere of Otrobanda, one of Willemstad's historic districts.
