Discover more about Archaeological Site of Nea Paphos

The Archaeological Site of Nea Paphos, located near Paphos Harbour, unveils the captivating remnants of what was once the island's capital. Founded in the late 4th century BC by Nikokles, the last king of Palaipafos, Nea Paphos flourished, especially under the Ptolemaic kingdom, becoming a vital hub for culture, trade, and religion. From the 2nd century BC to the 4th century AD, it served as Cyprus' capital. The site earned its place on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980. Nea Paphos boasts a rich tapestry of historical treasures, including the famed Paphos mosaics, considered among the best-preserved in the Eastern Mediterranean. These intricate mosaics, primarily found in Roman villas like the House of Dionysos, House of Aion, House of Theseus, and House of Orpheus, depict scenes from Greek mythology. The House of Dionysos, named for the god of wine, features extensive mosaic floors covering 556 square meters. The House of Theseus, believed to have been a governor's residence, showcases a vast floorplan and well-preserved mosaics. Other significant landmarks within the park include the Agora, the Asklepieion (a healing temple), the Odeon (an ancient theater still used for performances), the Saranta Kolones (a castle named for its forty columns), and the ruins of the early Christian Basilica of Panagia Limeniotissa. The Saranta Kolones, built in the 7th century AD, served as a defense against Arab raids. The theater of Nea Paphos was built around the time the city was founded and was in use until the 5th century AD. Despite its initial grandeur, Nea Paphos declined after a 4th-century earthquake and Arab raids in the 7th century. Today, ongoing excavations continue to reveal more of the city's past, making it a must-see destination for history enthusiasts.
