Discover more about Basilica of Panagia Limeniotissa

The Basilica of Panagia Limeniotissa, or 'Our Lady of the Harbour', stands as a captivating archaeological site within the Paphos Archaeological Park. Founded in the early 5th century during the Byzantine era, this basilica offers a glimpse into Cyprus's early Christian past. Originally, the basilica boasted a grand design with three aisles, separated by twin rows of marble columns, a striking apse, and a narthex. The walls and floors were adorned with vibrant mosaics displaying intricate geometric patterns. However, the basilica's history is marked by both prosperity and destruction. In 653 AD, Arab raids caused significant damage, leading to its repurposing as a garrison with workshops, stables, and living quarters. The invaders even erected a tower in the narthex, possibly used as a watchtower, lighthouse, or minaret. Following the Arab retreat in 688 AD, the basilica was restored, albeit on a smaller scale, maintaining its three-aisled structure. But in 1159 AD, an earthquake devastated the church, leaving it abandoned and its location lost among the ruins of Nea Paphos. It wasn't until the 20th century that the Basilica of Panagia Limeniotissa was rediscovered, with excavations beginning in 1937 and officially in 1959. Today, as part of the Paphos Archaeological Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), visitors can explore the ruins, envisioning its former splendor through the remaining mosaics and restored columns.
