Discover more about Archaeological Site of the Tombs of the Kings

The Tombs of the Kings, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980, is a large necropolis located about 2 kilometers north of Paphos Harbour in Cyprus. Dating back to the 4th century BC, these monumental underground tombs are carved out of solid rock and represent the final resting place of Paphitic aristocrats and high officials, rather than actual kings. The name 'Tombs of the Kings' derives from the grandeur and splendor of the tombs themselves. Inspired by ancient Egyptian tradition, some tombs imitate the houses of the living, featuring Doric columns and frescoed walls. The architecture is more Macedonian than local, which makes the tombs unusual for the area. The seven excavated tombs are scattered over a wide area. The third tomb is particularly impressive, with an open atrium below ground level surrounded by columns. Other tombs have niches built into the walls where bodies were stored. Excavations have been ongoing since 1977, revealing Rhodian amphorae that help date the tombs and artifacts. While much of the original tomb bling has been lost to grave robbers, the site maintains a sense of pious reverie. Early Christians also used the tombs as hideouts during Roman persecutions, celebrating liturgies in secret. Today, visitors can explore the catacombs, wander through the burial chambers, and appreciate the historical significance of this remarkable archaeological site.
