Discover more about Buffavento Castle

Buffavento Castle, aptly named 'Defier of the Winds' in Italian, stands as a testament to Cyprus's tumultuous history and strategic importance. Located high in the Kyrenia Mountains at 940 meters above sea level, the castle commands panoramic views of the Mesaoria plain and the northern coastline. Originally built as a Byzantine watchtower in the 11th century to guard against Arab raids, the castle was later expanded by the Lusignan dynasty. Its strategic location allowed it to serve as a crucial communication link between St. Hilarion Castle to the west and Kantara Castle to the east. During the Lusignan period, it was also used as a prison. Richard the Lionheart captured the castle in 1191 during his campaign against Isaac Komnenos, the self-proclaimed emperor of Cyprus. Legends surround the castle, including tales of hidden treasures and noblewomen seeking refuge. The castle's architecture reflects both Byzantine and Frankish influences, with its naturally guarded location requiring minimal additional fortifications. Today, Buffavento Castle is a ruin, but its surviving towers and walls evoke a sense of grandeur. The climb to the castle is steep, involving approximately 600 steps, but the stunning views make the ascent worthwhile. From the summit, visitors can see Kyrenia, the Karpas Peninsula, the Gulf of Famagusta, and even the Turkish Taurus Mountains on a clear day. Exploring the castle offers a unique opportunity to connect with the past and appreciate the natural beauty of Cyprus.
