Discover more about Tower of Rigena

The Tower of Rigena, also known as Pyrgos tis Rigenas, is a historical landmark in Perivolia, Cyprus. This medieval tower, built during the Venetian era (15th-16th century), served as a crucial observation point to guard against Arab raids in the Eastern Mediterranean. Positioned on a low hill, about two kilometers north of Cape Kiti, it was part of a network of towers used to send signals to military administrations in Larnaca. The tower itself is a modest, square stone structure, each side measuring approximately six meters. The entrance, located four meters above ground on the west side, was originally accessed by a retractable ladder. Inside, a water tank was used to store essential supplies. The architecture features Venetian and Frankish influences, including carved decorations and the Lion of Saint Mark, a symbol of the Venetian Republic. Local legends intertwine with the tower's history, with stories of a queen (Rigena) who used an underground tunnel connected to the tower to travel to Tersefanou Baths or escape raids. Another myth suggests the goddess Aphrodite admired Rigena bathing in the area's clear waters and chose to bathe there herself. Designated as a protected monument in 1905, restoration work began in 1911. Today, visitors can explore the tower, appreciate its historical significance, and enjoy panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Larnaca coastline. The surrounding area of Perivolia offers a blend of Cypriot traditions and modern amenities, making it an enriching experience for history enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.
