Discover more about Tower of Rigena

The Tower of Rigena, also known as Pyrgos tis Rigenas, is a historical landmark in Perivolia, Cyprus. This medieval tower, constructed during the Venetian era (1489-1570), served as a vital observation point. Situated on a low hill, approximately two kilometers north of Cape Kiti, it was strategically positioned to monitor the Eastern Mediterranean for potential Arab raids. The tower formed part of a network of similar structures used to send signals to military administrations in the Larnaca district, alerting them to impending dangers. The tower itself is a compact, square structure, with each side measuring about six meters. The entrance, located four meters above ground on the western side, was originally accessed via a hanging ladder. Inside, the tower comprised two floors and included a water tank at its base. The architecture features Venetian and Frankish influences, including carved decorations and, at one time, three Venetian coats of arms, the most prominent of which depicted the Lion of Saint Mark, a symbol of the Venetian Republic. Over the centuries, the Tower of Rigena has become entwined with local folklore. Legend has it that a queen, Rigena, used an underground tunnel connected to the tower to travel to the Terserfanou Baths or to escape during raids. Another myth suggests that the goddess Aphrodite, captivated by Rigena bathing in the clear waters near the tower, chose to bathe there herself. Designated as a protected monument in 1905, the tower underwent maintenance in 1911 to preserve its structure. Today, visitors can explore the tower, appreciate its historical significance, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The nearby village of Perivolia offers restaurants and shops, providing modern amenities for tourists.
