Discover more about Roudias venetian bridge

Deep within the Paphos Forest lies the enchanting Roudias Venetian Bridge, a testament to Cyprus's rich history and natural beauty. Constructed during the Venetian period (1489-1571), the bridge was part of a network built to support trade and transport across the island. It facilitated the movement of goods, particularly copper from nearby mines, towards coastal ports. The bridge spans approximately 10 meters across a tributary of the Xeros River, featuring a beautifully proportioned semicircular arch rising about 5.6 meters above the water. Built entirely of local stone, it showcases the practical engineering and aesthetic sensibilities of Venetian craftsmanship. Despite damage from an earthquake in 1953 and a near demolition during British rule, the bridge was restored in the late 1970s and stands today as one of the best-preserved Venetian bridges on the island. The name “Roudia” is believed to originate from the roudi bush (Cyprus sumac), once abundant in the area and used for leather tanning and dye production. The bridge is part of the scenic Venetian Bridges Trail, a popular hiking route connecting it with the Tzelefos and Elia bridges. The surrounding forest of pine, oak, and plane trees provides a haven for nature lovers, with crystal-clear streams and diverse flora and fauna.
