Discover more about Archaeological Site of Tenta at Kalavasos

The Archaeological Site of Tenta, also known as Kalavasos-Tenta, is a remarkable Aceramic Neolithic settlement located near the modern village of Kalavasos in Cyprus. Dating back to around 7000-6000 BC, Tenta provides invaluable insights into the lives of the island's earliest inhabitants. Perched on a small, naturally defensible hill overlooking the Vasilikos River, the village was ideally situated near essential resources such as water and fertile land. The early settlers constructed circular homes from stone and mudbrick, demonstrating sophisticated building techniques for their time. Excavations have revealed tools, beads, and other domestic items, offering a glimpse into their daily life and craftsmanship. To protect the delicate ruins from the elements, a distinctive cone-shaped shelter has been erected over the site. This architectural intervention not only preserves the ancient structures but also enhances the visitor experience, allowing exploration of the ruins in a protected environment. Informative panels explain the site's characteristics and development over nearly three millennia. According to local tradition, the name 'Tenta' originates from 327 AD when St. Helen, the mother of Constantine the Great, stayed in a tent ('tenta' in Greek) at this location during her visit to the island after discovering the Holy Cross in Jerusalem.
