Hala Sultan Camii: A Cypriot Sanctuary

Hala Sultan Camii, also known as the Mosque of Umm Haram, is a significant Muslim shrine located near Larnaca Salt Lake in Cyprus. It holds immense religious importance for Muslims, ranking among the holiest sites in the Islamic world. The mosque complex includes a mosque, mausoleum, cemetery, and living quarters. The term 'tekke' (lodge) applies to a building designed specifically for gatherings of a Sufi brotherhood. The mosque is built over the tomb of Umm Haram, believed to be either the Prophet Muhammad's foster mother or a close companion from Medina. According to tradition, Umm Haram accompanied Arab forces during their initial forays into Cyprus in the 7th century. She died near the salt lake after falling from her mule and was buried on the spot. This event led to the site becoming a place of pilgrimage and reverence for Muslims. The Hala Sultan Tekke complex evolved over centuries, with the main structures dating back to the Ottoman period. The mosque itself was constructed in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, showcasing classic Ottoman architectural elements. These include a distinctive minaret, a central dome, and several smaller domes, all contributing to the site's visual harmony. Inside the mosque, visitors are greeted by a serene atmosphere. The interior is adorned with traditional Islamic art, including intricate calligraphy and geometric patterns. The tomb of Umm Haram is draped in green cloth and remains a focal point for prayer and reflection. The surrounding gardens provide a tranquil oasis, with lush greenery, tall palm trees, and colorful flowers. These gardens offer a peaceful space for visitors to stroll. The Larnaca Salt Lake is perhaps the ideal site for a religious sanctuary such as Hala Sultan Tekke. Its deep dark waters are perfectly still and home to some rare species, such as the Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber), the Kentish plover, and also seagulls and many species of ducks.
