Discover more about The Cyprus Museum

The Cyprus Museum, also known as the Cyprus Archaeological Museum, stands as the primary repository of Cypriot antiquities, offering a comprehensive journey through the island's history from the Neolithic period (9000 BC) to the Early Byzantine era (7th century AD). Founded in 1882 during British rule, the museum's establishment was spurred by concerns over illicit excavations and the smuggling of artifacts. The museum's collections comprise finds from excavations island-wide, encompassing pottery, jewelry, sculpture, coins, copper objects, and more. Exhibits are displayed chronologically, allowing visitors to trace the evolution of Cypriot culture. Key artifacts include a Chalcolithic cross-shaped idol, Early Bronze Age pottery from Vouni, Late Bronze Age golden jewelry from Egkomi, and a 1st-century BC statue of Aphrodite of Soloi. The museum building itself is a historical landmark. Construction began in 1908 and concluded in 1924, while Cyprus was under British administration. Designed by architect N. Balanos, with later extensions, the building reflects a blend of architectural styles. Today, the Cyprus Museum continues to acquire and display significant finds, offering visitors a captivating exploration of Cyprus's cultural heritage.
