Discover more about The Eaved House

The Eaved House, known locally as Saçaklı Ev, stands as a remarkable testament to Nicosia's layered past. Located in the Selimiye quarter, southeast of the Selimiye Mosque, its name derives from the wide eaves ('saçak' in Turkish) that support the hall protruding over the street. While the exact construction date remains uncertain, architectural evidence suggests origins stretching back to the medieval period, with a Gothic arch discovered during renovations hinting at a Lusignan-era foundation. However, the Eaved House as it exists today largely reflects the Ottoman period. Following the Ottoman conquest of Cyprus in the 16th century, the building underwent significant transformations, evolving into a grand Ottoman residence. The lower floor retains Lusignan architectural elements, while the upper floor showcases Ottoman design. The main reception room on the first floor was constructed using timber-frame techniques, while other rooms were built with stone and mud-bricks. Over time, the ground floor rooms were converted into shops, each with its own entrance facing the street. In 1986, recognizing its historical and cultural significance, the building was nationalized. Extensive renovations between 1994 and 1996 aimed to restore the building to its former glory, removing later additions to reveal original architectural features. Today, the Eaved House serves as a cultural and arts center, hosting art exhibitions, meetings, and conferences. Visitors can explore the well-preserved rooms and exhibits, gaining insights into the daily life, customs, and traditions of Nicosia's past residents.
