Discover more about Fikardou Rural Museum

Nestled in the Troodos Mountains, approximately 40 kilometers southwest of Nicosia, lies the village of Fikardou, home to the Fikardou Rural Museum. This idyllic and secluded village, almost deserted, was declared an Ancient Monument in 1978 and awarded the Europa Nostra award in 1987. The village has been carefully restored to preserve its 18th-century houses, showcasing remarkable woodwork and folk architecture. Vehicles are not allowed to enter the village, preserving its tranquil atmosphere. The Fikardou Rural Museum comprises two main houses: the House of Katsinioros and the House of Achilleas Dimitri. The House of Katsinioros, named after its last owner, is a two-story stone manor with a steep wooden roof, exhibiting architectural features dating back to the 16th century. The upper floor served as the living area, while the ground floor was used for grape pressing, wine storage, and agricultural tools. The House of Achilleas Dimitri has been transformed into a weaver's workshop and a guest house for scholars, adding to the village's cultural significance. Inside the House of Katsinioros, visitors can explore furnished living quarters that reflect the everyday life of a rural family. Tools and utensils connected with rural life are exhibited on the ground floor, providing a picture of rural life and the inhabitants' activities. An exhibition of photographs, drawings, and texts documents the restoration process of the houses. Fikardou's history dates back to the 8th century when the village served as a refuge. Over time, it developed into a thriving community known for its agricultural activities and traditional crafts. The village church, dedicated to the apostles Peter and Paul, dates back to the 16th century. Today, Fikardou is a living museum, with its well-preserved architecture, narrow cobblestone streets, and tranquil atmosphere.
