Discover more about Larnaka Medieval Fort

Larnaka Medieval Fort, a historical edifice also referred to as Larnaka Castle, is situated at the southern end of the popular Foinikoudes promenade. Its origins are debated, with some historians attributing its construction to Lusignan King James I in the late 14th century to protect the town's harbor. Others suggest the Ottomans built it in 1625 AD, though a Turkish presence was documented as early as 1570 AD. Following the Ottoman period, the British repurposed the fort as a prison, using the western chamber for executions until 1948. Today, the fort houses the Larnaka Medieval Museum, which displays artifacts from the Early Christian era (4th-7th centuries) to the Ottoman period (18th-19th centuries). The museum is spread across three rooms. Visitors can explore the fort's walls, towers, and the courtyard, which also serves as an open-air theater with a seating capacity of 200, hosting cultural events during the summer. The fort offers scenic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the city.
