The Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia invites visitors on a captivating journey through the history and social development of Nicosia, Cyprus, from the Chalcolithic period (3000 BC) to the present day. Housed within a complex of meticulously restored historic buildings in the old city , the museum offers a visitor-friendly space to explore its extensive collections. The museum's exhibits narrate the story of Nicosia, the last divided capital of Europe, through more than 5,000 years of history. The collections include archaeological artifacts, costumes, photographs, medieval pottery, maps, engravings, jewels, and furniture. The permanent exhibition galleries guide visitors through the city's evolution, from ancient times to the Byzantine, medieval, Ottoman, and British periods, and finally to the Republic of Cyprus. Founded in 1984 and opened to the public in 1989, the museum is named after its donor, the A. G. Leventis Foundation. In 1991, it was honored with the European Museum of the Year Award. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, lectures, educational programs, and other events. In addition to the permanent galleries, the museum also houses the Leto and Costakis Severis Collection and the Chris Phylactou Collection, which showcase Cypriot and medieval antiquities.
