Discover more about Church of the Holy Cross

Nestled in the heart of Pano Lefkara, the Church of the Holy Cross, also known as Timios Stavros, is a spiritual and historical landmark. The church dates back to the 14th century, with evidence suggesting the eastern part of the structure originates from this period, as indicated by preserved frescoes behind the iconostasis. Over the centuries, the church has undergone several renovations and expansions, each contributing to its unique architectural character. In 1740, a significant transformation occurred with the addition of a wood-carved iconostasis crafted by Chatzikyriakos, a sculptor from Rhodes. The iconostasis features intricate depictions of biblical scenes and figures. The church was expanded in 1867, and in 1909, the propylaea were built and preserved. The dome was painted in 1953, completing its transformation into the architectural marvel it is today. A focal point is the silver cross housed within its crypt. According to local lore, this cross contains a fragment of the True Cross, the cross upon which Jesus Christ was crucified. Tradition holds that Saint Helena brought the cross to the village during her visit to Cyprus. The silver cross is adorned with fourteen reliefs depicting scenes from the life of Christ, angels, and the saints Constantine and Helena. The church's bell tower, constructed in 1857 with donations from Lefkarians living abroad, stands as a symbol of the community’s enduring connection to their ancestral home.
