Discover more about Lefkara Museum of Traditional Embroidery and Silversmith Work

The Lefkara Museum of Traditional Embroidery and Silversmith Work, located in the village of Pano Lefkara, is a tribute to Cypriot artistry. The museum is housed within the 'House of Patsalos', named after a member of one of the village's wealthiest families. Constructed from local white limestone, the house features rooms built between the 19th and early 20th centuries. The ground floor depicts traditional village life with a rural dining room and storeroom displaying large jars and agricultural tools. The upper floor's three rooms recreate the atmosphere of a grand Lefkara home from the 19th and early 20th centuries, complete with traditional costumes, jewelry, and a collection of Lefkara embroidery. Lefkara is known worldwide for its lace, called "Lefkaritiko," which is now on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list. According to local tradition, noble women taught the women of Lefkara the art of embroidery between 1191 and 1571. Legend says that Leonardo da Vinci visited Lefkara in 1481 and bought a lace cloth for the main altar of Milan's Duomo. Silversmithing in Lefkara may date back to the early 18th century. The craft flourished in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s thanks to the Kalopaidis family. The museum complex includes a reconstruction of a blacksmith's smithy, with original tools and sound effects.
