Discover more about Achilles' Mosaic

The Achilles' Mosaic, located within the Paphos Archaeological Park, offers a captivating glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of Roman Cyprus. The park itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcasing ruins from the 4th century BC to the Middle Ages. Discovered in the 20th century, the mosaics have been carefully preserved and are on display for visitors. The Achilles' Mosaic is found within the House of Theseus, named for another mosaic depicting Theseus battling the Minotaur. The villa served as the residence of a Roman proconsul or governor. The Achilles' Mosaic, which dates back to the 5th century AD, is located in a reception room of the villa. The mosaic's most prominent scene showcases Achilles' first bath. His mother, Thetis, attempts to make him immortal by dipping him in the River Styx. She holds him by the heel, leaving that part of his body vulnerable, foreshadowing his death in the Trojan War. Other figures, including Ambrosia and Anatrophe, add depth to the scene. The mosaic's intricate geometric patterns and vibrant colors, achieved through countless tiny tesserae, demonstrate the exceptional skill of Roman mosaicists.
