This cargo ship, built in 1964, met its fate on March 23, 1998, when it ran aground off the coast of Paphos during a voyage from Greece to Syria. The ship was carrying a cargo of timber when it encountered severe weather, leading to its stranding near the Paphos Lighthouse. The eight crew members, consisting of Greeks, Pakistanis and Syrians, were rescued by a British military helicopter in a dramatic operation. Adding to the intrigue, it was later discovered that the captain and first officer had forged competency certificates. Today, the rusted remains of the MV Demetrios II serve as a striking landmark, drawing tourists and locals alike. The wreck is approximately 500 meters offshore and is easily visible from the coastal road between Paphos and Coral Bay.
