Ancient Kourion: A Window to Cyprus's Past

Ancient Kourion, located near Episkopi, is a captivating archaeological site that unveils Cyprus's layered past. Founded as early as the Neolithic period, the city flourished from the 13th century BC when Mycenaean settlers arrived. Its strategic location on a high bluff made it a vital settlement throughout various periods. Kourion's history is rich and varied. It was one of the most influential city-kingdoms in ancient Cyprus. The city played roles in regional conflicts, even siding with the Persians during the Cypriot uprising in the 5th century BC. Later, Kourion supported Alexander the Great against the Persians. Under the Ptolemies and Romans, Kourion thrived as a cultural and economic center. Visitors can explore the well-preserved Greco-Roman Theatre, which once seated 3,500 spectators and is still used for performances. The House of Eustolios reveals intricate 5th-century mosaics and a bathing complex. The Roman Agora, surrounded by marble columns, and the early Christian basilica showcase the city's diverse influences. Other notable sites include the House of Achilles and the House of the Gladiators, known for their mosaic floors. Kourion met a dramatic end in the 4th century AD when severe earthquakes struck the region. Although rebuilt, it was eventually abandoned after Arab raids in the 7th century. Rediscovered in the late 19th century, Kourion continues to draw visitors with its commanding views and remarkable ruins.
