Discover more about Chrysoroyiatissa Monastery

The Chrysoroyiatissa Monastery, located approximately 40 kilometers northeast of Paphos at an altitude of 820 meters, is a significant religious and cultural site in Cyprus. Founded in 1152 by the monk Ignatius, the monastery is dedicated to Our Lady of the Golden Pomegranate (Chrysoroyiatissa), named after a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary discovered by the founder. Legend says that this icon was cast into the sea in Asia Minor to save it from destruction during the iconoclastic period, eventually washing ashore near Paphos. While the monastery was founded in the 12th century, the present building dates back to 1770. The main church (katholikon) showcases elegant Byzantine artistry, adorned with frescoes and intricate icons. The iconostasis, a wooden screen separating the nave from the sanctuary, features detailed carvings and gilded details. In addition to the main church, the complex includes a second, underground chapel believed to be the oldest structure on the site. The monastery also houses an important collection of artifacts dating from the 12th to the mid-19th century, including icons, liturgical vessels, and manuscripts, displayed in the Eikonoskevofylakion (Exhibition hall). Beyond its religious importance, Chrysoroyiatissa Monastery is known for its contribution to viticulture. Re-established in the mid-1980s, the monastery's winery produces some of Cyprus's finest wines using traditional methods. Visitors can sample these wines while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The monastery celebrates the Dormition of the Virgin Mary every year on August 15th, drawing pilgrims and visitors for religious ceremonies and festivities.
