Discover more about Kato Pafos Archaeological Park

The Kato Pafos Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980, invites visitors to explore the remains of ancient Nea Paphos, showcasing a captivating blend of history and mythology. Founded in the late 4th century BC by King Nicocles, it flourished as a Hellenistic and Roman hub, serving as Cyprus's capital from the 2nd century BC to the 4th century AD. Dominating the archaeological landscape are the stunning mosaic floors of four Roman villas: the House of Dionysos, the House of Theseus, the House of Aion, and the House of Orpheus. These mosaics, considered among the finest in the Eastern Mediterranean, depict scenes from Greek mythology with incredible detail and vibrant colors. The House of Dionysos features mosaics portraying the god of wine, hunting scenes, and mythological events. The House of Theseus showcases the battle between Theseus and the Minotaur, while the House of Aion boasts five figural panels depicting various mythological scenes. The House of Orpheus features Orpheus charming animals with his lyre. Beyond the mosaics, the park features other significant monuments, including the Asklepieion (a temple dedicated to the god of medicine), the Odeon (an ancient theatre), the Agora (a marketplace), the Saranta Kolones (Forty Columns) Castle, and the ruins of the Limeniotissa Early Christian Basilica. The park is still under excavation, offering the potential for new discoveries. Exploring the park requires a good amount of walking, so comfortable shoes, water, and sun protection are recommended, especially during the hot summer months.
