Discover more about Archaeological Site of Nea Paphos

The Archaeological Site of Nea Paphos, located near Paphos Harbour, is a sprawling UNESCO World Heritage Site that invites visitors to step back in time and explore the remnants of an ancient city. Founded in the late 4th century BC by King Nicocles, it served as the capital of Cyprus from the 2nd century BC to the 4th century AD. The site offers a fascinating glimpse into the island's rich history, spanning from the Hellenistic and Roman periods to the Byzantine era. Nea Paphos is renowned for its remarkably well-preserved Roman villas, particularly the House of Dionysos, the House of Theseus, the House of Aion, and the House of Orpheus. These villas boast intricate mosaic floors depicting scenes from Greek mythology, hunting expeditions, and daily life. The House of Dionysos is the largest and most famous, with its mosaics showcasing the god of wine. The Villa of Theseus, believed to have been the residence of the Roman Governor, features a vast floorplan and well-preserved mosaics, including the iconic depiction of Theseus battling the Minotaur. Beyond the villas, the archaeological site features other significant monuments, including the Agora (market), Asklepieion (a temple dedicated to the god of medicine), Odeon (an ancient theatre), Saranta Kolones (Forty Columns Castle), and the ruins of an early Christian basilica. The Odeon, a 2nd-century theatre, is still used for theatrical and musical performances. Saranta Kolones, a 7th-century Byzantine castle, was built to protect the city from Arab raids. The Tombs of the Kings, a magnificent necropolis with elaborate underground tombs, lies nearby. Ongoing excavations continue to unearth new treasures, making Nea Paphos a dynamic and evolving archaeological site. Visitors can easily spend several hours exploring the ruins, admiring the mosaics, and imagining life in this ancient capital.
