Discover more about Avakas Gorge Nature Trail

Avakas Gorge, located within the Pegeia state forest on the Akamas Peninsula, is a breathtaking natural attraction formed by the erosive power of the Avgas River over millennia. The gorge boasts towering limestone cliffs that rise dramatically, in some places almost meeting at the top, creating a cathedral-like atmosphere. The canyon's unique geological formations, composed of erodible limestone rocks, loams, and bentonitic clays, have earned it recognition as part of the Natura 2000 area. The Avakas Gorge Nature Trail guides visitors through this mesmerizing landscape, following the winding path of the Avgas River. The hike varies in difficulty; the initial section is an accessible path through an open valley, while the inner gorge presents a more challenging terrain with rocky paths and the need to navigate over boulders. The trail immerses hikers in a lush oasis, with diverse flora including pines, fig trees, cypresses, and the Akamas centaury, alongside fauna like foxes, hares, and various bird species. As you venture deeper into the gorge, the air cools, and the sounds of nature intensify, creating an immersive experience. The narrowest section of the gorge is particularly awe-inspiring, with sunlight filtering through the towering walls. While the hike is generally considered moderate, it requires sturdy footwear and a reasonable fitness level due to the rocky and sometimes slippery conditions. It's advisable to avoid hiking in the gorge during or after heavy rain, as the water level can rise rapidly, making the trail impassable and potentially dangerous. Despite these challenges, Avakas Gorge remains a popular destination for those seeking a unique and unforgettable natural adventure in Cyprus.
