Discover more about Chrysoroyiatissa Monastery

Chrysoroyiatissa Monastery, dedicated to Our Lady of the Golden Pomegranate, is located approximately 40 kilometers northeast of Paphos, Cyprus, at an altitude of 820 meters. The monastery was founded in 1152 by the monk Ignatius after he discovered a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary. Legend says this icon was painted by the Apostle Luke and was cast into the sea to save it from iconoclasts, eventually washing ashore near Paphos. The present building dates back to 1770. The monastery's architecture showcases traditional Byzantine artistry, and the church is adorned with frescoes and icons. The iconostasis, which separates the nave from the sanctuary, features intricate carvings and gilded details. Beyond its religious importance, Chrysoroyiatissa Monastery is known for its viticulture. The monastery's winery, which was commercially re-established in the 1980s, produces wines from its own vineyards. Visitors can sample local wines while enjoying panoramic views. Celebrations are held every year on August 15 in honor of the Virgin Mary. The monastery also houses a museum that displays religious artifacts, ancient manuscripts, and icons.
