Discover more about Paphos Forest

Paphos Forest, the largest forest area in Cyprus, is a captivating natural wonderland in the western region of the island. Established as a Permanent Game Preserve in 1938, it encompasses a diverse range of ecosystems, from rugged mountain peaks to verdant valleys, creating a haven for both flora and fauna. The forest is characterized by dense pine forests, dominated by Calabrian pine, extending from sea level to higher altitudes. Interspersed among the pines are native trees, including the Cyprus cedar, primarily found in Cedar Valley, and the golden oak. The forest floor is covered with a rich variety of shrubs, herbs, and wildflowers, creating a vibrant tapestry of colors throughout the year. Paphos Forest is home to a diverse array of species. The most iconic resident is the Cyprus mouflon, a rare and endangered wild sheep found only on the island. Birdwatchers can spot various avian species, including Bonelli's eagle, the Cyprus warbler, and the Cyprus wheatear. Scattered throughout the forest are ancient monasteries, churches, and Venetian bridges, remnants of the island's rich past. Kykkos Monastery, one of the most famous monasteries in Cyprus, is nestled within the forest. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and nature exploration. A network of well-maintained trails caters to all levels of fitness and experience. Popular trails include the Adonis and Aphrodite trails, near the Baths of Aphrodite, offering coastal views and a glimpse into the island's mythology. The Smigies Nature Trail offers two loops with views of Lara Bay and the Akamas Peninsula.
