Discover more about Arminou Reservoir

Arminou Reservoir, also known as Arminou Dam, is a captivating destination nestled within the Paphos district of Cyprus, offering a serene escape from the island's bustling tourist hotspots. Located approximately 40 kilometers from Paphos town and a few kilometers northeast of the charming village of Arminou, this hidden gem is a haven for nature enthusiasts, hikers, and anyone seeking tranquility amidst breathtaking scenery. The reservoir itself is a man-made lake created by the construction of the Arminou Dam, an earth dam with a maximum capacity of 4.3 million cubic meters of water and a height of 40 meters. The dam plays a crucial role in the region's water management, diverting water to the Kouris Dam and enriching the aquifer of the Diarizos River, which irrigates plantations along its 40-kilometer course. The surrounding landscape is characterized by rolling hills, dense forests, and diverse flora and fauna, creating a picturesque setting for outdoor activities and relaxation. Visitors to Arminou Reservoir can immerse themselves in the tranquility of the natural surroundings through various activities. Leisurely walks along the shoreline offer stunning views of the calm waters reflecting the vibrant greenery, providing ample opportunities for photography and quiet contemplation. Several hiking trails wind through the forested areas, catering to different skill levels and offering panoramic vistas of the reservoir and the surrounding landscape. Birdwatchers will delight in the diverse avian species that inhabit the area, while anglers can try their luck at catching carp and largemouth bass, with fishing being permitted year-round with a valid license. The reservoir's peaceful atmosphere makes it an ideal spot for picnicking, where families and friends can gather to enjoy a meal amidst nature's beauty. While there are currently no facilities within the dam area, visitors are encouraged to bring their own refreshments to enjoy a picnic while soaking in the stunning views. Beyond its natural beauty and recreational opportunities, Arminou Reservoir also holds historical and ecological significance. The dam's construction has altered the river ecosystem, impacting riparian habitats and sparking debate among local communities. However, it has also provided a reliable water source for irrigation and drinking purposes, contributing to the region's agricultural economy and supporting local communities.
