4.3

The Agia Solomoni Catacomb, located in Kato Paphos, is a fascinating historical and religious site with roots stretching back to the Hellenistic period. Originally a complex of chamber tombs, it evolved into a Christian shrine dedicated to Agia Solomoni, a woman who, according to tradition, embraced Christianity and sought refuge in the cave to escape Roman persecution. The site consists of an open courtyard surrounded by five chambers carved into the rock. One of the chambers contains a freshwater spring, while another displays remnants of Christian wall paintings from the 12th century, along with graffiti etched by Crusaders in the 13th century. Descend the stone steps to explore the underground grotto and experience the unique atmosphere of this ancient sanctuary. Above the catacomb stands a large Terebinth tree, considered sacred by locals. Visitors continue the pagan tradition of tying colorful rags and pieces of fabric to its branches, believing it will bring blessings and cures, especially for eye ailments. The catacomb is open day and night and there is no entrance fee. Nearby attractions include the Paphos Ancient Odeon, the Hrysopolitissa Basilica, and Paphos Harbour.
