Avakas Gorge, located near Peyia in the Paphos district of Cyprus, is a breathtaking natural formation sculpted over millennia by the erosive forces of the Avgas River. The gorge is characterized by its towering limestone cliffs that rise dramatically, creating a narrow canyon with unique geological formations. The constant erosive activity on the sloping limestone rocks, composed of loams, chalks, and bentonitic clays, has resulted in a diverse and captivating landscape. The Avakas Gorge Nature Trail, a linear path that stretches approximately 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) one way, invites visitors to explore this natural wonder. The trail follows the course of the Avgas River, leading hikers through an open valley before entering the gorge itself. As you venture deeper, the terrain becomes more challenging, with rocky paths, narrow passages, and the need to scramble over boulders. The gorge's narrowest section features towering walls that almost meet at the top, creating a cathedral-like atmosphere. The gorge is home to a variety of plant and animal life, including the Akamas centaury flower, various trees, bushes, lizards, frogs, hares, and even wild goats. The moist environment within the gorge supports thick vegetation, providing a cool and shady escape, especially welcome during the hot summer months. While the hike is generally considered moderate in difficulty, it is essential to wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for slippery conditions, especially when crossing the stream. It is also advisable to avoid hiking in the gorge after heavy rain due to the risk of flooding and falling rocks. Despite these challenges, the Avakas Gorge offers an unforgettable experience, immersing visitors in the serene beauty and geological wonders of Cyprus's natural landscape.
